Morningside Park was overflowing with revelers and good spirits Friday, August 15th, as over 240 inner-city children celebrated learning how to swim, thanks to Regis House’s Annual Summer Swimming Sponsorship. The children spent their graduation celebration playing basketball conquering obstacle courses and swimming. Recognizing the importance of teaching children to swim, City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, Director of Parks and Recreation Santiago Corrada, Regis House Executive Director Luis Cabrera, Regis House Board Member Raul Botifoll, and the famous Miami HEAT mascot Burnie attended the graduation celebration, applauding the children and their efforts. As a special treat, Wali Jones, Miami HEAT Community Affairs Liaison, motivated the children with inspiring words on safety and the importance of their achievements. As a 10-year veteran of the NBA, Mr. Jones had the honor of winning a championship ring alongside Wilt Chamberlain on the 1967 Philadelphia 76ers team. Every summer the media reports on tragic incidents of children drowning in pools, canals, or lakes. These economically disadvantaged kids were able to learn how to swim through Regis House’s sponsorship program. Regis House, with the help of the Mayor’s office, several private companies and numerous individual contributors, raised funds to provide these youth, ages 7-14, with free-swimming instruction. The children participated in swimming classes offered by the City of Miami Parks and Recreation, all completely free of charge. This Summer, Regis House's "Learn to Swim" program in cooperation with the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Dept., will target to save the lives of at least 250 inner-city children by teaching them how to swim. Classes start in mid-June and continue through August. This program is made possible with the help of private sponsors. Commissioner Dorrin Rolle also awarded Melrose Elementary School Principal, Ms. Cynthia Gracia with a Proclamation to Melrose Elementary School for improving overall in performance, going from an "F" to a "C" school. This was a true neighborhood celebration with attendance from children, parents, Regis House Staff members (including the Executive Director, Robert Ruano who received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Mayor and Commissioners of Miami-Dade County), Team Metro Melrose Staff members (including Suzanne Salichs, Regional Coordinator and Sam Walthour, Deputy Director of Team Metro), to the Members of the Melrose Advisory Committee, Empowerment Zone Trust Neighborhood Assembly members and Commissioner Rolle's aides - Reverend Philip Johns(who said the invocation) and Dante Starks. Proud of their school and their neighborhood, Melrose citizens welcomed others to join in the festivities such as: the Linebacker for the Detroit Lions, Barrett Green, and student volunteers from Our Lady of Lourdes Academy and Belen Jesuit Preparatory School.
On Saturday, May 12th, Adrian Gomez, Belen Key Club's President, presented a check for $2,000 to Robert Ruano, Regis House's Executive Director. From August 28, 2001, the Belen Key Club from the Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, at 500 SW 127th Avenue started the year off with a campaign for changing the lives of inner-city children. To date, this group of young men have given approx. $10,000 in contributions and in-kind services. Together with Regis House, the Belen Key Club started a fundraiser "Change for the Life of a Child" campaign by placing collection canisters in each homeroom. Every Tuesday, members of their club would volunteer their time after-school and drive over to Melrose Elementary School and assist with the after school program that Regis House provides, by helping children with their homework, art and recreational activities. "Through their fundraising efforts and weekly trips to Melrose Elementary School, the future for the program and the children are better than ever." Explained Robert Ruano, "They have made a huge difference in these children's lives and we look forward to continuing to work with them next year." Regis House is a non-profit organization, delivering mental health, substance and educational services to youth and adults throughout Miami-Dade County. Established in 1984, Regis House serves over 100 individuals daily. ###
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 26, 2001 CONTACT: Terri Carvalho(305) 642-7600 Ext. 204 Parents are given meaning through service. For Barbara Minnick, a Washington, D.C. resident, visiting Miami for the first time was a bittersweet experience. It was 17 years ago that her son Kelvin went to Father Francisco Perez-Lerena for help at Gesu Church in Downtown Miami. Kelvin was addicted to cocaine so Father Perez-Lerena went with him to several drug treatment facilities to find placement. What they found was rejection and no relief for Kelvin's addiction. Within a year, Kelvin would be dead of an overdose. His mother left to wonder if her child's life was in vain. That day in 1984, Father Perez-Lerena (a Jesuit priest and teacher for many years) was frustrated and felt that something had to be done. Within weeks of Kelvin's visit, Father Perez-Lerena met with volunteers and community leaders to see what they could do. Several months later, Regis House, a nonprofit center providing substance abuse and mental health services to children and adults, was born. On Sunday, November 25th, at Regis House's Annual Gala Luncheon, Barbara Minnick and her husband Olden finally got some closure to the loss of losing their eldest son, when he was only 28 years old. "For a long time, I was in denial," said Barbara Minnick, "I asked God, 'What was the purpose of his life?'" When Barbara learned that Regis House had served over 25,000 people, many with drug abuse and mental health problems, her question was answered. "I am so proud. Looking at the wonderful things that have happened here, I know this is exactly what Kelvin would have wanted," said Minnick, after accepting a plaque in memory of their son. The plaque, bearing a picture of her son as he looked in high school, says of Kelvin "Whose struggles against drug addiction led to the creation of Regis House. Although his life was short, his spirit will live forever in the hearts and minds of those who labor here." The plaque will be displayed permanently in the agency's lobby. Before the luncheon, the Minnicks had no idea that the encounter with their son had touched so many lives, or even that he was the impetus for an organization's birth. "Regis House was started out of a frustration," explains Father Perez-Lerena, "going around with Kelvin, many people told us we had no appointment and so, would not help him. Something had to be done." Kelvin's circumstances helped Father recognize a compelling need in our community and with the help of volunteers; he opened Regis House. Through the assistance of private donors and government and foundation grants, Regis House continues to provide much-needed services to the less fortunate in Miami-Dade. The programs range from intervention services with juvenile offenders with substance abuse issues, to adults with mental illness, to recreational programs to keep kids safe after school. ###

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 16, 2001 CONTACT: Terri Carvalho(305) 642-7600 Ext. 204 Regis House is awarded the 2001 Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Environmental Business Practices Award On Friday, June 15th, 2001 - Regis House was presented with the 2001 Environmental Business Practices Award sponsored by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. Regis House, a non-profit organization, relying on grants and donations, which means that sometimes there are struggles, aims to help anyone from kids to adults. Although Regis House has accomplished several in-house environmental practices, such as a paper-recycling program and energy reduction strategy, this organization has gone beyond the traditional approaches. "We are extremely honored to receive this award," says Mario Yanez, Regis House, C.F.O. "It shows how our efforts are not only helping the community but also the environment." Regis House has made a conscious decision to incorporate environmental education and awareness into their youth and adolescent programs. Two programs in particular have benefited from this decision: the After-school program in Melrose Elementary and the Family Empowerment program. The After-school program serves over 100 children a year from grades 2 through 5. Regis House has built in a field trip component to the After-school program to offer children and their families an alternative to staying home on teachers' workdays. So far these field trips have been to the Everglades National Park hosted by Audubon and Citizens for a Better South Florida, a Miami River Boat Tour hosted by the Miami River Commission, and Miami-Dade Community College Environmental Center's Nature Camp sponsored by Citizens. These kids also participated in Earth Day Latin Style by collaborating on a mural with local artist Alex Morales. The Family Empowerment program, a diversionary program for first time offenders from the age of 14 through 17, has also benefited from our incorporation of environment with an overnight camping trip to Big Cypress Preserve and walking tour of Shark Valley. Most of these kids have never been exposed to the natural environment or even been camping before. More trips are planned for the future. Many of these kids volunteered for Team-Metro clean-up in the Melrose Community and at the Earth Day Latin-style in Little Havana. Regis House has made a considerable effort to incorporate environmental activities and learning opportunities into their existing programs and plans are in place for new programs in the near future. Some of these include the Tree Canopy Project in collaboration with Citizens for a Better South Florida and Weed and Seed; community tree planting and beautification projects. ###
